Your garage door opener’s reverse safety system is there for a reason – to stop the door from closing on something (or someone) it shouldn’t. Making sure it works properly is a quick and easy check you can do yourself.
Here’s how to test it.
Step-By-Step Safety Check
- Grab a piece of timber or steel – something solid and around the height of a brick works well. (image)
- Place it flat on the ground where the door closes – right in the middle of the opening. (image)
- Close the garage door using your remote or wall button. (image)
If the safety system is working properly, the door should come down, gently touch the object, and then automatically reverse and open back up.
Why This Matters
If the door doesn’t reverse and tries to keep closing – that’s a sign something’s wrong, and it’s time to get it looked at. A faulty safety system can damage your door, your car, or worse, cause injury to an unsuspecting person.
It’s a simple test, but it gives you peace of mind that your opener is doing its job.
