Regular lubrication is one of the easiest ways to keep your garage door running smoothly and quietly. It reduces wear and tear, helps extend the life of your parts, and can even prevent those annoying squeaks and grinding noises.
Here’s The Lubricants We Recommend:

Here’s a quick guide on how to lubricate your garage door depending on the type you have:
Sectional Garage Doors
Sectional doors are made up of multiple panels connected with hinges and run on tracks with wheels.
What to lubricate:
- Metal hinges: Spray with WD-40 or a similar multi-purpose lubricant.
- Plastic hinges: Use white lithium grease to minimize squeaking and creaking.
- Springs: A light coat of WD-40 will help reduce friction.
- Wheels: You can use either WD-40 or lithium grease – just a small spray on the bearing inside the wheel will do.
Tilt Garage Doors
Tilt doors swing outward and upward in one solid piece, so they have fewer moving parts, but still need some attention.
What to lubricate:
- Moving joints (pivot points, arms, etc.): Spray with lithium grease or WD-40 for smooth operation.
- Springs: Lightly coat with WD-40 to keep them from squeaking, seizing up or rusting.
- Lock mechanism: A quick spray with silicone spray will keep the lock working easily without attracting dust.
Roller Garage Doors
Roller doors move vertically and roll up into a drum. They’ve got fewer exposed moving parts but still need maintenance.
What to lubricate:
- Axle (where the drum spins): Use lithium grease to reduce friction.
- Side tracks: Spray with silicone spray – never use WD-40 here, as it can attract dust and cause sticking.
- Lock: Give it a spray with silicone spray for smooth key action.
Final Tips
- Don’t overdo it – a quick spray is all you need. Wipe off any excess to avoid buildup.
- Avoid spraying the door surface, cables, or chain belts unless specified by the manufacturer.
- Always use the right lubricant for the right part – using the wrong one can actually cause damage over time.
